Fill mom’s day with love by setting a special outdoor table for a dazzling Mother’s Day Celebration. Designer Roy Dollar shares his secrets for creating a beautiful Mother’s Day tablescape with an elegance that’s fitting for this spring occasion.
“I love to layer and add a hint of the unexpected,” says Roy. “Heirloom china, crystal and silverware, particularly family pieces, bring a since of history to the table that’s perfect for Mother’s Day. Family photos in silver frames grouped around the table would be a nice addition.” In addition, vintage lace tablecloth and napkins contrast antique napkins as placemats, providing a touch of nostalgia.
“Silk hydrangea hanging balls and live hanging baskets with mixed annuals add color and texture overhead,” says Roy. He suggests getting plant hooks from the garden shop to help hang things overhead. When selecting hanging baskets for such an arrangement, be sure to pick baskets that also look pretty on the bottom with flowers that have good drops.
When it came to selecting flowers for the centerpieces, Roy decided to go with lilies and roses because they’re his favorites and add color and fragrance. Huge silk roses from the hobby and craft store provide a touch of whimsy in a tall mid-century Persian container.
As final touches, a single rose tucked into each napkin is a nice takeaway for each guest. And a handful of silk or fresh flowers tied with organza ribbon attached to the back of a dining chair denote Mother’s importance and place of honor.
