At Summer Classics, we are in a unique position to see outdoor furniture trends as they emerge from 5 different vantage points. Each vantage point is represented by a division: Summer Classics wholesale to over 300 US dealers, Summer Classics Contract to commercial architects and designers, Parker James private label to large specialty retailers, Gabby (indoor transitional and antique style furniture) wholesale to US dealers, and Summer Classics HOME a chain of 10 company owned retail stores. As a result of this broad range of touchpoints, our pulse on the market is unique and often accurate. Here are the emerging 2013 outdoor furniture trends as observed from the front lines per se, from our VP of Retail stores, and confirmed by Summer Classics wholesale:
-Transitional details (or the lack of) continue to influence style direction. It does seem that softer contemporary is gaining in popularity as pure traditional seems to be waning, but only in degrees not in large steps. While straight lines in profiles and silhouettes are larger in scale, they reflect comfort. We are seeing more fluid and curved shapes as well but the best are done gently and often paired with straighter elements.
-We are seeing a fairly equal choice in either metal or woven product. Wood is less important for Summer Classics.
-Sectionals have become very popular as entertaining demands more seating space and options while large outdoor surfaces need large furniture. And comfort is a third requirement sectional can fill.
-Color is certainly more present in both fashion and in consumer’s preferences than in the recent past. However, neutrals remain in the majority of plans we do for our customers and clients. But there is a shift to more of a balance between light neutrals and livable colors. Yellows shown with grays and the blending of several tones of blue are the most popular combinations we are seeing.
Red is being asked for but as an accent not the primary color.
Summer primaries: red, orange, yellow and blue used with a neutral correlate are finding their way onto our floors and into homes.
-Architectural and garden motifs continue to grow in consumer use.
-Stripes, plaids, and checks are following the lead of ready to wear and are more graphic and less complicated.
-The outdoor living space is being treated much the same as the interior with full accessorization. Most of our design plans include outdoor rugs, outdoor art or some wall item, outdoor lamps and accessories. We all want to spend more time al fresco and we want to do it more luxuriously. Or at least much more comfortably so frames and cushions have all become more generous in scale and proportion. A number of our customers are asking for outdoor drapery panels and we have good resources for them.
-It would seem that the ‘escape’ we all searched for in our homes over the last decade has expanded and exploded onto our yards and lawns. We are doing house calls for clients who have two, three or more levels or areas to furnish outside the walls of their homes. We see houses with a main terrace, a bedroom terrace, pool area, and sometimes-other spaces. Those outdoor kitchens and living rooms that include fireplaces or firepits require a good bit of furniture and design help.
