Throw a Fourth of July Garden Party Freshly cut lawn, fireflies punctuating the blackness of night, plants exploding with color—these are some of the best things about summer. So if you haven’t planned an outdoor party, the Fourth of July is a great excuse for an evening on the patio with friends and family. Here is Summer Classics’ recipe for the perfect party: 1. A Gourmet Burger 2. A Classic, From-the-Garden Cocktail 3. A Mosquito-Free Space 4. A Beautifully Decorated Tablescape 5. A Good Piece of Outdoor Furniture A Gourmet Burger There’s nothing more American than a hamburger. So what better to serve than a burger, kicked up a few notches to make it gourmet? For an easy-to-make burger, we love James Beard’s favorite burger (recipe here: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/sara-moulton/james-beards-favorite-hamburger-recipe/index.html). With his use of simple, good-quality ingredients, it’s easy to see why James Beard remains a culinary legend. Tips: -Cook a batch of burgers on the stove or on the grill. -Substitute toasted brioche buns instead of regular buns. Brush inside of buns with melted butter or oil, and place on grill until they toast. -Set out these toppings for guests to create their own gourmet burger, including: crumbled blue cheese, caramelized onions, fresh sliced avocado, good-quality applewood smoked bacon, aioli (storebought, or, for a quick and easy recipe, go here: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/garlic-aioli/). -For a quick side dish, celebrate tomatoes while they’re in season with this quick and easy tomato-basil-fresh-mozzarella-salad. Recipe found here: http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/tomato-basil-fresh-mozzarella-salad-10000000320094/ Garden-Fresh Summer Classics Cocktail Like our outdoor furnishings, this Summer Classics Basil Vodka Gimlet is a perfect twist to an old classic. A hint of basil gives the cocktail a peppery, fresh-from-the-garden twist. 1.5 ounces fresh-squeezed lime juice (about two limes) 1.5 ounces simple syrup 3 ounces vodka 6 basil leaves muddled Add lime juice to the shaker. Muddle the basil leaves in the shaker, allowing the liquid to infuse about 5 minutes. Add vodka and simple syrup. Add ice. Shake for 30 seconds. Strain and pour. Makes about one drink. Adjust recipe to number of guests. Ban Mosquitoes from Your Guest List To cut down on unwanted bugs: Outdoor ceiling fans, or small plug-in fans on and around a patio help keep mosquitoes at bay. Decorative citronella candles placed strategically around should cut down on unwanted bugs. There are all sorts of citronella options aside from the kitschy wooden tiki torches. We love Frontgate’s Mosquito Repellent candles placed in decorative holders to create an ambient mood (http://www.frontgate.com/outdoor-decor-accessories/mosquito-insect-control/#3) A Beautifully Decorated Tablescape
