ASID/SC Design Challenge Winners to Be Announced on Saturday

Summer Classics Home and ASID Alabama will announce the first, second and third place winners of the ASID/SC Design Challenge on Saturday, January 27 at 6 pm, at a Gala to be held in the Summer Classic Home store in Pelham.

Sixty-four students from every interior design school in the state of Alabama entered the challenge where they each designed a chair using teak that embodies the timeless, yet intriguing Summer Classics style. The students, who turned in their projects on December 1, were judged by a team at ASID and Summer Classics on a three pillar system based off of design aesthetic, marketability and manufacturability.

“The entries have been outstanding,” said Matt Scallions, Assistant Vice President of Design Summer Classics. “It has been a great opportunity for us to reach out to the schools in Alabama that have interior design programs. And it’s a chance for them to work on a real world company with a real world problem.” Scallions also noted that the opportunity allows Summer Classics to see the talent of this generation of designers.

Through this unique design competition, Summer Classics hopes to tap into the creativity of millennial minds. Shari Park-Gates, Auburn University Professor, explained, “Our young students now are more in tune with understanding that we have a diverse population and that they’re designing for that population and not for themselves.”

The students, their parents, professors and the ASID chairs and guests have been invited to the event and will have the opportunity to tour the building before the announcement.
