What Makes Summer Classics a Classic?
Great style is timeless. So is Summer Classics. Why? Because quality and sophisticated elegance never go out of style. The textbook definition of classic guides everything we do at Summer Classics—from designs to production to customer service. Take a look at the reasons why every piece we make is truly a classic.
Summer Classics is Committed to Style:
Summer Classics began with a single idea more than 25 years ago. Founder and CEO Bew White identified a simple Adirondack chair and set out to make it the best in quality and style for outdoor furniture. As the company evolved, he looked to other timeless pieces and put his own spin on things. Not only did he maintain the hallmarks of tried-and-true designs, he also found ways to ensure their longevity through technological innovation. His first Summer Classics original, Romance, took cues from a age-old French design. Today, some of Summer Classics’ most popular lines are the ones created 10-15 years ago.
“With every new design, we take a classic design from indoor furniture and transition it for outdoor living with outdoor engineering and materials. We choose styles that people are familiar with it and can relate to. We look to pieces with a style that clients love to have inside their home. When it looks good and performs outdoors, that’s always a win,” says product designer Matt Scallions.
Summer Classics is Committed to Quality:
It’s easy for a lot of companies to take shortcuts just to increase production, but at Summer Classics, we like to take our time to get things right. Sometimes that means it takes two years and eight prototypes before a new piece hits market. “Everything we do is very considered. Details are done with quality and attention. There’s an obsession or passion usually associated with that product and our goal is always to make it the best of what it can be,” says design director Wright Currie. “We don’t overstep the things that need to be done. We make sure everything we do is done the best way possible—no matter how long it takes.”
At Summer Classics headquarters in Pelham, Alabama the product development team gathers around a central table in the design room to brainstorm new ideas. From researching historical furniture styles, to considering appropriate materials, to determining the best possible way to package and deliver the final product, every single detail is tweaked to perfection. “It takes a lot of time, thought, and effort to create a balanced and beautiful product,” Wright says. “We hone our samples and prototypes and labor over the details.”
Summer Classics Puts Clients First:
“At Summer Classics, we have a mantra to do whatever it takes to serve our customers first and give them the best product and service possible. We are a large company but at the same time we have a small business mentality when it comes to getting things done the right way,” says Matt Scallions.
Owner, Bew White, remains hands-on with every new design that Summer Classics produces. “Bew knows each piece inside and out,” Wright says. “At how many other companies do you actually get to work directly with the owner of the business and talk directly about the importance of design? We examine every piece and discuss why it is important—from the curve of an arm to the width of a seat to the level of the head rest. It’s this kind of communication that lets us know we are all moving in the best direction possible for every single piece we create.”
Summer Classics Gets Better With Age:
“Classic doesn’t mean old. It’s timeless. It’s something you can’t argue with. I’m a contemporary guy, but there are some antiques out there that just make me stop and say, ‘Wow. That is an incredible piece of furniture,’” says Wright.
“Look at Corvettes and Mustangs. They have been around since the 50s and 60s. Technology has improved over the years, but those cars will always be a Corvette or a Mustang—there’s just generations of them.” Wright adds, “Summer Classics is just like that. It has a design presence. Truly great design never really has an expiration date.”
Summer Classics creates products with even more staying power thanks to carefully-selected teak hardwood and innovative products such as UV resistant N-Dura Resin wicker, hand-wrought aluminum, and performance outdoor fabrics.
Summer Classics Remains Relevant:
Summer Classics continues to add collections and streamline finishes for mixing and matching to create individual style for each client. Every year, any given collection may gain a new dining table, side table, chair or accessory piece. The 2016 introductions included more than 220 new items whether it was a color change or completely new piece. “The materials and finishes we use transcend collections making them easy to mix and match within a single line or several lines,” Wright says. “Resins and wood finishes are chosen to complement each other so you can easily pair a woven chair with a wood table or the other way around depending on the look you want.” Similarly, Summer Classics’ exclusive Sunbrella fabrics come in solids and patterns to let customers create their signature style.
