You’ve created the perfect outdoor space and everything is just right for entertaining and enjoying your luxury outdoor furniture for years to come. However, you’ve noticed mildew. What do you do now?
Below are tips for preventing and removing mildew from your outdoor furniture.
Mildew is a Common Problem
One of the best ways to keep your outdoor furniture in top notch condition is to eliminate mildew. Mildew is a form of mold that develops most easily in a dark, damp, and warm environment. Not only can it cause discoloration to your furniture, it can also cause health problems.
When it comes to removing the mildew, your method of removal will depend upon the material of our furniture. Once the mildew is removed you can then maintain your furniture by regularly giving it a quick cleaning and keeping it dry!
Removing Mildew from Wood
Many people think bleach is the answer for removing mildew, but bleach can be too harsh for your wooden outdoor furniture. It can weaken and discolor the wood, causing even more problems.
For wooden patio furniture mix a solution of 1 cup ammonia, 1⁄2 cup white vinegar, and 1⁄4 cup of baking soda into 1 gallon of water. Use a kitchen sponge or washcloth for application. If you notice any mildew growth coming back, use full-strength white vinegar immediately to nip it in the bud.
Removing Mildew from Wicker
Mildew removal from wicker can get tricky because of all the nooks and crannies; wicker furniture has places that you just can’t reach with a washcloth!
Wipe down the outside of the furniture with mild soap and water. Next, use a hose to spray out the spaces you can’t reach. It helps if you have a high pressure nozzle. You can even use a pressure washer set on the low setting to effectively clean the mildew from our wicker furniture just remember not to stand too close to the furniture when spraying and test a small spot in the back before proceeding.
Removing Mildew from Metal Surfaces
Metal is the easiest surface to clean. If you notice mildew growth on your metal outdoor furniture, simply wipe it clean with mild soap and water. While cleaning the metal frame of your outdoor furniture is easy, the cushions that often come with it are more delicate.
Removing Mildew from Cushions
To remove mildew from your outdoor cushions, first determine whether you have fabric or acrylic cushions.
Fabric Cushions: To clean fabric cushions, dilute a 1⁄2 cup of bleach into 1 gallon of water. Use a spray bottle to apply the mixture, then clean the mildew off of the cushion with a scrub brush. Once you have removed the mildew, rinse the cushion with water.
We do have one word of warning. Not all outdoor cushions can tolerate cleaning with bleach. All Summer Classics cushions are designed to resist fading in the sun, and they can be cleaned with bleach. For cushions from other manufacturers, it is very important to do a spot test before using bleach on your outdoor fabric. To do a spot test, use the mixture on a small, inconspicuous spot to make sure that the color doesn’t fade with the bleach.
If your fabric fails the spot test, never fear. There is a less harsh mixture that you can use. Pour a 1⁄2 cup of lysol into a gallon of hot water and use this solution to scrub your cushion. You can then rinse it off with a mixture of 1 cup lemon juice and 1 cup salt dissolved into a gallon of hot water.
Acrylic Cushions: For acrylic cushions, mix 1 cup bleach and 2 cups of detergent into a gallon of water. It is easiest to apply with a spray bottle. Let is set for about 30 minutes before rinsing with water.
