The very mention of the word “eclectic” can make designers shudder with memories of unfocused contemporary projects like those inspired by the Memphis Movement in the 1980’s. It may evoke images of mounted animal heads mixed with modern rugs, or a visually assaulting combination of experimental sofa pieces with freeform shaped coffee tables. However, eclectic design is gaining in popularity in today’s market. Defined as “a broad range of subjects, styles, and ideas,” the word eclectic does not connote disorganized chaos, but rather diversity and synthesis of styles.
At its core, the word “eclectic”, indicative of innovation and creativity, has become an emerging movement in interior design. It invites the development of a personalized aesthetic involving a curated approach.

At last year’s “Design Blogger’s Conference” in Atlanta, Bunny Williams gave a presentation on the most popular new room in interior design…the outdoor room. When working with your clients to create an eclectic outdoor room, Summer Classics offers unique and distinctive pieces that pair together well, creating an eclectic mix. For instance, Summer Classics’ Club collection was made purposely for the visionary designer, aimed at bringing eclectic style ideas to reality. While many patio furniture stores conveniently show collections in matching groups, we designed the Club Collections to encourage customers and retailers to try mixing between collections. Our Club collections are actually three distinctive groups: Club Woven, Club Aluminum, and Club Teak. Our Club Woven Collection features pieces that are fully wrapped in UV resistant N-dura resin wicker. The Club Aluminum group is defined by traditional style slatted backs and a durable wrought aluminum structure. In Club Teak, each item is made of marine-grade teak with mortise and tenon joinery. In its entirety, this three-part collection is intended to mix into unique combinations. Below, we’ve paired one item from each collection as a representative sample. Although this eclectic grouping is comprised of different finishes and materials, it results in a fresh, new design. With a wide variety of options available in the Club Collection, our goal is to inspire customers and designers with high-end luxury pieces that you can use to create your own eclectic outdoor room.
Mix Other Collections
Eclectic design celebrates variety by beautifully displaying innovative mixtures of styles, colors and materials. While the Club Collection is intentionally designed for a mix-and-match aesthetic, consider venturing outside Club items when choosing pieces for an eclectic look. Peruse some of our lifestyle photos for inspiration. We hope they’ll generate some more ideas about using our product to create unique, eclectic outdoor furniture sets.
Summer Classics’ Club Collection demonstrates the design possibilities that emerge from mixing wicker, teak, and aluminum materials. But beyond the Club Collection, we offer several examples of how we create eclectic style by integrating different materials into one dynamic layout. A prime example of successful material combinations is the Regent Collection. In the lifestyle photo above, we’ve paired a contemporary woven outdoor sofa with Club Aluminum coffee and side tables. By contrasting aluminum with wicker, but both finished in similar light grays, we get textural interest with color unity.
Summer Classics is a virtual one-stop-shop for most material categories of outdoor furniture. As such, we offer a variety of finishes that pair well together for a customer’s desired look. Each piece is ordered a la carte. For instance, in the above photo, the Astoria Collection mixes elegant “oyster” gray wicker chairs with the Ella Coffee Table made of aluminum and Superstone. Ella has a durable wrought aluminum frame featuring interlocking ovals with a superstone table top. Its “charcoal” finish keeps the monochromatic scheme, but brings out the differences in color value for interest.
You can achieve a controlled yet eclectic look by mixing different styles while keeping the same materials and color. Consider the Croquet Teak dining chairs and Round Teak Table in the photo. Every piece is made of teak wood material finished in “natural” light brown for a uniform color and contrasting style. With a slatted back and gently sloping back legs, these dining chairs are traditional in style. By contrast, the round outdoor dining table features a double scalloped base and exposed tenon for a French country design. The eclectic blend of classic and rustic styles results in an elegant, yet approachable look.
When it comes to personalizing your outdoor space, Summer Classics offers designers high quality pieces a la carte, with complementing finishes and distinctive but transitional styles. Whether you mix items from our Club Collections, created to encourage eclectic design, or take inspiration from our other collections that combine different styles, colors, and materials, our goal is to facilitate your efforts to create the perfect outdoor room. Most patio furniture stores’ and manufacturers take a matched collection approach to navigating their products. Summer Classics also recognizes designers and their creative processes. Our goal should not be to pre-design your client’s outdoor room, but rather to make luxurious pieces and lifestyle arrangements that inspire creativity. By showcasing our “eclectic” style, we aim to celebrate stylistic diversity, the actualization of a personal aesthetic and a burgeoning innovative movement in outdoor design.
