“Alex and I designed this home from the ground up,” Cynthia explains, “While we have become known for our trademark cypress elements and architectural details, like wainscoting, custom doors, and expert millwork, livability is also a priority.” The couple purposefully added features that would contribute to the home’s “seamless” feel, like the infinity door that smoothes the transition between indoor and outdoor living spaces.
Coastal Home Color Palette
Choosing hues that reflect the laid-back coastal atmosphere, Cynthia kept the home’s color palette “light and sunny”, gravitating towards various shades of blue and soft green. In the sunlit dining room, dark navy brings a “gorgeous, nautical richness to the space while still feeling very fresh and modern.” Cynthia’s office is painted Wedgewood Blue––a classic shade that “makes working inside feel surprisingly bright and airy.”
“When it comes to designing bedrooms, I want the space to feel like a peaceful retreat,” Cynthia says. For this serene space, Cynthia selected fresh white linens accented by calm blue textiles and warm touches of yellow. This coastal color palette creates a calm and breezy aesthetic, perfect for this 30A beach house.
Beach House Bedroom Decor
How does this busy family keep their breezy bedrooms clutter-free? Practical furniture choices make clean-up easy. Cynthia shares a simple storage solution: “For side tables, I gravitate towards pieces with storage. They give the space a more substantial feel while also keeping the design clean and uncluttered.” Here, she placed eggshell white Sarah Chests around the four-poster bed, which you can see above.
Cynthia & Alex also focused on creating an “easy flow for family, friends and entertaining” with custom storage and private bedrooms. Strategic furniture selections enhance the home, like Gabby’s vintage-style Alexis Chest, which opens to reveal generous storage space.
Coastal Living Room Design
For the living area, Cynthia used materials like linen, rattan, pecky cypress and soft gold hardware to create harmony with the natural surroundings. When it comes to home decor, she favors “vintage, sunbleached Turkish rugs, white ceramic pieces, books in shades of blue and pewter accessories for a bit of shine.” In the living room, these accents accompany Gabby’s wingback Watson Chairs.
Beach House Poolside and Patio Design
Despite its famous slogan, the sunshine state isn’t always sunny. Cynthia admits, “We get a lot of sunshine in the summer, rain during the spring, and even some freezing weather in the winter.”
Given its durability and timeless appearance, teak has become Cynthia’s favorite material for outdoor spaces: “It always looks good…and eventually weathers to a beautiful soft gray.” Accented with navy upholstery and fringed throw pillows, her Summer Classics Haley Lounge Chairs & Ottomans have loads of classic seaside charm.
The Rice’s also take advantage of their temperate coastal climate with an outdoor fountain––”a favorite spot for jumping”–– an al fresco dining area, and a poolside patio where the family watches movies on warm summer nights. The Club Teak Chaise Lounges are the perfect spot to enjoy 30A’s sunny days and nights.
A mother of three, Cynthia is “always thinking about making the design family friendly” when designing homes. For their own residence, the Rice’s chose long-lasting, easy-to-clean decor, like performance pillows from Wendy Jane by Gabby. Whether they’re “cooking a meal, doing homework, playing cards, watching a movie or enjoying the swimming pool,” the interior and exterior spaces facilitate quality family time.
