On November 11, Summer Classics Home in Pelham, Alabama had the honor of hosting the 2017 Relay for Life Queens of Chilton County, Alabama. These young ladies are brought together with the purpose of bringing awareness and raising money for childhood cancer. This is Summer Classics Homes’ fourth year to be a part of this amazing organization. Each year the group gathers at the store to take pictures throughout the showroom.
Originally formed in 2013 as a Relay for a Life fundraiser at Westin Baptist church in Chilton County, the fundraiser has since developed into a group of beauty pageant queens of all ages who make appearances throughout the year to bring awareness for childhood cancer.
Sunny Mays, director of this organization, call these young women her “Working Queens,” as all the girls work hard throughout the year to raise money for childhood cancer. This past September, the group held a pajama drive for Children’s hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. According to Sunny, “The girls got the Chilton County community involved and through our community collected 146 pairs of pajamas that were then donated to Children’s Hospital.”
These beauty queens have also made many appearances over the years at Hope Lodge in Birmingham, which is where patients can stay while they are receiving treatments at local hospitals. The girls go to Hope Lodge twice a year to cook for the current residences. They also team up with the local Girl Scout troop and decorate pillowcases together, which are then donated to the patients at Hope Lodge.
While everyone’s family has been touched by cancer in one way or another, these young women are helping fight the fight by raising money for research to hopefully, one day, find a cure.
